Community Monuments

Carving History

Two custom granite monuments have been created to honour the courage and compassion of the villagers who responded to the 1873 SS Atlantic wreck. The idea for the monuments was developed through community engagement with descendants and residents since 2022.

This collaborative process included stone carver Avi Miller, local artist Lynette Richards, descendants, community members, and the SSA150 Legacy Projects Steering Committee. The monuments are placed in Lower Prospect and Upper Prospect, the two main communities from which people responded to the shipwreck and the aftermath. Interpretation at each site is embedded into seating areas.
